ABSTRACT
The Alaska Water Use Act was passed in 1966, providing for the appropriation of water for out-of-stream uses; however, in 1980, the Act was amended to include reservation of water uses. This paper will give an introduction to typical water reservation use appropriations, managed under the “Reservation of Water Program” within the Alaska Department of Natural Resources.
Alaska’s waters are abundant and widespread, but given the increasing demand it is essential that Alaska be proactive in its water management. Many individuals, groups, organizations, and agencies understand the tremendous relevance of retaining waters within the streams and lakes, whether it is for fish and wildlife habitat, recreation and parks, navigation and transportation, or for the preservation of water quality. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources Reservation of Water program provides an effective tool to retain waters within the streams and lakes of Alaska.
